The key is that both rod and line are perfectly matched and extremely easy to cast. The Bill Drury Aura is a 14ft rod for a 9/10# line. A 5-piece rod, it is ideally suited for travel and will pack into most suitcases.

The new reel is robust and features a powerful and reliable disk drag system that is able to cope with both fresh water and salt water species. Machined from aircraft grade aluminium these reels are well balanced to the rods and offer a generous capacity for backing. The multi tip line will cover all fishing conditions and comes with four 15 ft tips which include a full floater, intermediate, sink S1/S2 and a T10 for when you need to fish really deep. They are ideally matched to the taper of the main 38ft head and running line. Such is our confidence in the combination that we have rods, reels and lines available for clients to rent at all Varzuga camps in Russia.

For as long as I can remember I have fished with Sage rods, before this I was a youth fishing with whatever was handed down from Grandfather's attic. However, every salmon I caught last season was on a Bill Drury Aura series rod. And I rather like it. I caught the first fish of the season on Kitza with it coupled with the BD 1000 reel and his signature line. The line casts effortlessly and turns over even the heaviest of tungsten tips.

If ever there was one line to cover them all this is it. The Aura series rod generates a similar amount of line speed as my main Sage rod but is far more forgiving. It did not take any getting used to and seemed to turn over heavy tips and large flies with ease. On the Umba in the autumn I coupled it with my shooting head system and was blown away by the accuracy and effortless ease of casting. Just a lovely fishing tool, priced way below its peers.
